The 2023 season gets underway this weekend for the University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team. Calgary hosts UBC for the first of four consecutive at Hawkings Field to start the year, with both Saturday and Sunday’s contests scheduled for 11 a.m.
Head coach Jenn Swagar enters her eighth season overall at the helm and her second since rejoining the squad for her second stint in 2022. Swagar heads into this campaign with 19 total wins as the Calgary bench boss.
The Dinos head into the season with some momentum for this year’s young group, turning in a pair of wins (3-1 and 7-1) over Guelph this past weekend in non-conference action.
Calgary returns reigning Canada West and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year Isabella Green and welcomes a talented group of 12 newcomers to this year’s roster.

The Dinos football team hits the road for the first time on the young season this weekend with a trip to UBC on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. Calgary opened the year with a 33-9 loss to Alberta this past weekend in a game that hinged on three big plays – all of which went in favour of the Golden Bears.
Last season, UBC posted a 39-29 win in Calgary to snap a 10-game losing streak in the series. In that one, then-rookie Matthieu Clarke exploded for a career-high 208 yards rushing on just 18 carries. The Dinos will hope to have Clarke back this week, after missing the opener with an injury.

Calgary’s women’s rugby team hosts its home opener this weekend, welcoming Lethbridge to campus for a Saturday afternoon affair. The 2 p.m. game is set to be played on campus at Field 7.
The Dinos – who graduated the majority of their starters from last year’s squad and were without a pair of returning all-stars in last weekend’s opener – will look to bounce back after a season-opening loss at Alberta.

The Dinos men’s soccer team returns home for a weekend homestand against a pair of conference foes from Edmonton, hosting Alberta on Saturday at noon before MacEwan comes to Dinosaur Field Sunday, also scheduled to start at noon.
Calgary is coming off a rollercoaster of a weekend that saw their Friday contest at Saskatchewan get postponed at the last minute due to air quality. Then, Dinos made the trek back to Lethbridge and grabbed an early 1-0 lead only to need to come back from a two-goal deficit to force a 3-3 draw.
Last year, the Dinos tied both the Golden Bears and Griffins in Edmonton before posting 1-0 and 5-0 wins against the pair late in the season in Calgary in games played at McMahon Stadium due to weather.

Calgary’s women’s soccer team will look to continue their winning ways while facing their stiffest test of the season, to date, with a pair of weekend games in Edmonton. The action starts Friday against long-standing rival Alberta before a Sunday contest against fellow unbeaten MacEwan. Both games are scheduled to kick off at noon.
The Dinos are once again off to a red-hot start to the season, defeating Manitoba, Winnipeg and Lethbridge by a combined score of 10-1. The Pandas are 1-1-2 thus far, while MacEwan heads into the weekend 4-0, outscoring their opponents 9-4 – six of which have been scored by Grace Mwasalla. The Griffins will take on Lethbridge before Sunday’s competition against the Dinos.
Calgary fell to Alberta 2-1 in the regular season in 2022 only to bounce back with a 3-2 double-OT win in the Canada West Quarterfinal. Meanwhile, the Griffins posted a 1-0 win in Edmonton last year for their second-ever win in the all-time series, but the game was eventually credited as a forfeit and 1-0 win for the Dinos due to the use of an ineligible player.

The Dinos golf team opens up the 2023 season early next week, heading to Kelowna for the annual Battle at the Bear. The season-opening tournament is scheduled to tee off Monday before wrapping up Tuesday.
This is the first of three fall tournaments for the Dinos, who will also head to Lethbridge next weekend (Sept. 17-18) before hosting their annual open Sept. 24-25 at Springbank Links.
