It’s officially the first Monday in May, which means the 2023 Met Gala is upon us.
This year, fashion’s biggest night is all about honoring the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, as well as raising money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, of course. The theme of this year’s exhibit, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” reflects on the German designer’s illustrious career from 1954 to his death in 2019. Celebrity guests have been asked to dress in reference to his work, which includes a number of iconic designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel, which he ran from 1983 to 2019.
Though Met Gala favorite Blake Lively will not be in attendance this year, guests will definitely include cochairs Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, and Dua Lipa, as well as Choupette Lagerfeld, the late Chanel designer’s feline companion and closest confident. While Rihanna’s presence has yet to be confirmed, the Fenty Beauty mogul has already been spotted dressing on theme in New York City, and will likely continue her reign as one of the Met Gala’s best-dressed celebrities.
